How Lord Rama Died?

Almost every Indian has read about the the birth and the life of Lord Rama, the seventh Avatara of Lord Vishnu. But, almost no one knows about the later part of life of Lord Rama. No one knows about the later ages of Lord Rama.

That’s where this question came up while talking with my friends “How Rama Died?” After Sita’s death or disappearance in earth (about which I will write more in near future) Lord Rama ruled Ayodhya Kingdon for 11 thousand years. Lord Rama lived all these years in grief and missed Sita Devi. But, he made the choice to live for the Ayodhya.

One day Kala took the form of a sage to meet Lord Rama. But, he couldn’t enter the Ayodhya because mighty Lord Hanuman was guarding the Kingdom and he was undefeatable (and also immortal). Lord Rama got to know the situation. As Lord Rama was Trikal Darshi (the one who can see three times past, present and future clearly) he dropped his ring purposefully in a cleavage on the floor and asked Lord Hanuman to find it.

The cleavage was very small and Lord Hanuman had to take the form of a Beatle. As Lord Hanuman entered the ground he came to know that the cleavage goes very deep. Still, as a good servant, he followed the cleavage and at the end of the cleavage, he found himself in Naag Loka. There the king of Naga’s Vasuki welcomed Lord Hanuman. Lord Hanuman told Vasuki about the situation. Vasuki took him towards a pile of rings and said one of the rings in this pile is Lord Rama’s ring. Although it was a difficult task Lord Hanuman took up the task to find Lord Rama’s ring in the pile.

To his surprise al rings were alike and all of them were identical same as his master’s ring. Hanuman got extremely confused. Then Vasuki told him that this is also one of the Leela’s of Lord Rama. “It is the leela to let you know that the end time of Lord Rama is coming closer. Lord Rama knows you will be very sad to know it but, Lord Rama existed before you were born and he will be born again.”

Meanwhile, the sage entered Ayodhya and asked for a discussion where no one will enter the room. Lord Rama asked Laxmana to guard the door and not allow anyone in the room otherwise he or she will be killed. Sage told Lord Rama, that ‘your days of living on earth are over’. While they were having the meeting in the room Sage Durvasa came outside the room and asked Laxmana to let him enter the room. Sage Durvasa threatened Laxmana that if he’s not allowed to enter, he will destroy the whole Ayodhya Kingdom and Ram’s lineage.

Laxmana made a choice and accepted the death instead of destruction of Ayodhya. Laxmana sacrifices his life by beheading himself at the bank of Sarayu river.

Lord Rama, lives the palace and slowly starts walking towards the Sarayu river. All pupil of Ayodhya watched it. Lord Rama walked across beheaded Laxmana and entered Sarayu. Slowly and slowly Lord Rama disappeared in the calm water of Sarayu.

After disappearance of Lord Rama, people saw Lord Vishnu on Shesha on emerging out of Sarayu river.

  1. Being born as a human to uphold DHARMA he showed with example and has to die as a normal human.Only the body( covering for the soul) dies not the ATMA.

  2. In the living universe not any being has lived thousands of years as is said about Rama. Who is going to believe it??? – NO ONE!

    1. If we can believe Jesus and Muhammad lived without having any forensic proof of their existence then we can believe in Rama as well. Faith and Science are different. Some people believe world was created in few days .. ab kya karenge?

    2. Many humans have lived thousands of years. The sumerian kings list has kings who ruled for many 10’s of thousands of yrs.

    3. In the texts, it’s written that one day of a King ruling his Kingdom in accordance with Dharma is equal to a year of any other King’s rule. This is why Lord Ram ruled for 11000 years, which roughly translates to 30 actual years.

  3. These ages(11.000 years) are sometimes alegorical, or symbolical, representing something else, but a good way of getting a mythological story more ‘factual'( including the Old Testament stories) is to take out the excess of ‘zeroes’ from the dates, i.e.; 11 years instead of 11.000!

    1. Even Lord Krishna knew he himself can defeat Kauravas’s singlehandedly. That’s not the point of Avatara. Besides, Lord Rama is a Purnavatar not a Paripurnavatar, which means the human called Lord Rama did not know about the godly qualities he had. Lord Rama was unaware of himself being an incarnation.

Lord Rama had to stick with human nature. He can be a fierce warrior, excellent leader but not the one who can move around with great agility like Hanuman ji. Different beings have different capabilities.

All avataras were afterall humans. They lived as humans and died as humans.

  4. As per Jainism belief and Jain Padam Puran by Aacharya Ravisenji, Lakshmanan died of shock of listening joke about Ram death, whereas Ram denounced the world after Lakshmanans death, and became Jain Muni. Later by destroying his karmas, he attained Keval Gyan (can see entire universe past, present and future at given time), and attained moksha from Mangitungi near Nashik Maharashtra. Ram is regarded as Siddha Bhagwan as per Jainism.

Ram was one of the purest soul born as 8th balbhadra in Jainism, and was a human, and worshiped Jin bhagwan. Somehow, if I think, logically I find difficult to digest reincarnation, as the same soul (form of energy) can’t be at two places at same time, so if Vishnu reincarnate’s as Ram than Vishnus sole has to leave current body (i mean death) and born as Ram, the soul can’t go back to same body again.

  5. All very contradicting.
Rama could see past, present and future, yet failed to see the purity of Sita. Apparently, Sita has to take fire test to prove her purity.

Stories for the sake of stories??!!

    1. Lord Ram knew that Sita Maatey is pure, untouched by Ravan. However, His praja would always doubt Sita Maatey. This would also obstruct His duties as a King. Since by Shastra, the duty of the King is more important than the duty of a husband, Lord Ram, in accordance with Dharma and Neeti, separates from Sita Maatey by exiling Her to a forest, where she lived with a Sage and raised Luv and Kush.
